Clutter is not conquered by doing a lot all at once, but by dealing with little and often. Here is a list of decluttering tips to help you reduce the clutter around you.
When you walk around the house, move things to their correct place, or throw them out. If something is where is shouldn’t be, don’t let it sit there.
When you store things, use plastic boxes that you can see into rather than solid plastic or cardboard boxes. Then your clutter stays visible.
Buy plastic boxes with the lid attached. If the lid comes off, it will separate from the main box and get lost.
The day before you go grocery shopping, clean out your fridge. Throw away any food that is going off and wipe down your fridge while it’s nearly empty.
Don’t keep magazines that are over three months old.
If you haven’t used it in more than a year, let it leave the house.
Never handle something more than once. When you get the mail, sort and toss, don’t go through it multiple times before you deal with it. Don’t move piles around dealing with them more than once.
Put hobby items in carts with wheels. Wheel them out when you need them, and wheel them back in place when you don’t.
If you intend to fix something, then fix it within the week, or get rid of it. We tend to have things we intend to fix, but in reality we never will.
If you plan on having a garage sale, fix a date and have one. Don’t put stuff in the garage for a sale you will never hold.
Before you buy something, ask yourself if you really need it. Will it be a blessing, or will it add to your clutter?
If you want to buy something, wait a month before buying it. Then ask yourself if you still want to buy it.
Schedule your time. And schedule times to declutter.
Declutter daily, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day.
Get your children involved with decluttering. Ask them for two or three things they don’t want any more, and ask them frequently.
